This shrub is a proven garden plant and a useful introduction, with a unique ability to adapt to extreme temperatures. In cold winds, it may behave more like a deciduous shrub, but in milder climates, it remains evergreen.

Abelia is a large genus with over 25 species, all of which are shrubs that can be evergreen, deciduous, or semi-deciduous. Abelia grandiflora was first raised in Italy in the mid-1800s and is a cross between Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora. From this original hybrid, many cultivars and varieties have been found, each with its own unique attributes.

One such variety is Abelia 'Edward Goucher', a hybrid of Abelia grandiflora and Abelia schumannii. This variety has a dwarfed habit, darker leaves, and deep purple flowers, making it a standout in any garden.
