Echinacea purpurea Happy Star
The Coneflower, also known as Echinacea purpurea Happy Star, is a unique and stunning herbaceous perennial that will add a touch of beauty to any garden. With its upright flower spikes reaching up to 100cm and large white open flowers, this plant is sure to make a statement in your mixed border. It thrives in full sun to semi shade and is hardy enough to withstand the changing seasons.
Originating from the United States, Echinacea purpurea has also been known as Rudbeckia purpurea due to its similarities with the Rudbeckia plant. Its strong stems and dark green leaves provide a sturdy base for the impressive daisy-like flowers that bloom in a rich purple/cerise colour. The iconic cone-shaped center in an orange/brown colour gives this plant its unique name, 'Cone Flower'.
These plants are typically found in the prairies of America and are accustomed to poor soils and competition from other plants. As a result, they prefer well-drained soils and full sun, making them a great addition to any mixed border with other perennials. Echinacea blooms from mid to late summer, adding a burst of colour to your garden.
One of the most exciting things about Echinacea is the wide range of varieties that have been bred and crossed to create unique and beautiful plants. While many varieties may seem similar, the key is in the flowering heights. Echinacea purpurea is one of the tallest, reaching up to 120cm. However, there are now options ranging from 40-50cm to 120cm, with a variety of colours from purple and pink to white. Some standouts include the bright orange and yellow forms of Echinacea Cheyenne Spirit and the unusual purple, green, and cream flowers of Echinacea Green Twister.
In addition to its beauty, Echinacea purpurea also has medicinal uses. Native Americans used it to treat burns, wounds, bites, and other ailments. Today, it is commonly used as an alternative medicine to boost the immune system.
