Geranium phaeum Lily Lovell

Introducing the unique Geranium phaeum Lily Lovell, also known as Dusky Cranesbill. This clump-forming perennial boasts pale green foliage and a good spreading habit, with flowers that hang over on stems to about 65cm in spring. What sets Lily Lovell apart is its dusky purple flowers and its ability to flower early in the year from April to May, and then again later in the summer.

The Geraniums in the phaeum species are highly versatile, thriving in full shade to full sun and adapting well to various soil types including clay, loam, sandy, and chalky soils. With a flowering height of around 70cm to 1m, this hardy perennial is easily maintained at a height of 70cm and a spread of 50cm.

  • Height: Easily maintained to 70cm
  • Spread: Easily maintained to 50cm
  • Foliage Colour: Pale Green, turning darker through the season
  • Flower Colour: Dark purple flowers
  • Soil Type: Moist, well drained, sandy, loam, chalk
  • Position: Full Sun - Full Shade
  • Hardiness: Fully Hardy once established, H7 (-15 and below)
  • Type: Herbaceous Perennial

When ordering, you can choose between a 9cm pot or a 2 Litre pot. Geraniums are divided into two types: Greenhouse Geraniums (officially Pelargoniums) and hardy perennial Geraniums, also known as Crane's Bill. Our focus is on the latter, which are easy to grow and make a great addition to any garden border. The Genus is vast, ranging from small alpines to large perennials.

These plants are generally low maintenance and can thrive in most conditions, except for very wet and boggy areas. They can tolerate full sun to semi-shade and typically flower from spring to late summer. Their low growth habit makes them ideal for ground cover and works well at the front of the border. For more vigorous varieties, trim back after the first flowering to encourage regrowth and a second flowering. In winter, a good mulch will provide the plant with all it needs to shoot away in the spring.
